A high-performance solution for high-end workstations and servers which allows connection of hardware devices via an intelligent adapter. It is expensive compared to IDE but has many benefits including ease of adding or removing devices on the fly and data through put along with no cpu overhead as the processing is offloaded onto a dedicated pci card.
